The month started with highlighting our favorite local girl bosses around town. Women entrepreneurs, artists and more are thriving throughout the different municipalities of Gaston County, so what better time to focus on them than Business and Economic Development Week? Gaston County Economic Development Commission and the Gaston Regional Chamber wanted to do a proper recognition of these ladies by hosting The Women Who Rock Luncheon for a second year in a row. Working women were recognized for their accomplishments or surpassing in positions that a man traditionally held.

In conjunction with Gaston Outside, TechWorks of Gaston County teamed up with Tech Talent South to put on Girls in Coding, a special two-part event dedicated to teaching young girls the basics of coding. The free events, kicking off on October 20thwill focus on the most popular programming language around—JavaScript. The girls will be taught to create an interactive computer game within a three-hour class. On October 27th, the girls will continue their work with the new social toy, JewelBots. TechWorks explains, “We’ll be using the Arduino IDE, a programming environment, and C++, a complicated and powerful programming language, to bring the bracelets to life.” Girls participating in the programs (aged 8 to 14years old) will leave knowing more than most about the art of coding. Coding is one of the most important career skills to have for the future, and women only make up 11.2% of software engineers. These sessions offer the perfect opportunity to pique  their interest to learn more!
